What is the Gottman Method

for Couples Therapy?

Based on four decades of research, the Gottman Method was created to address the common issues that couples face in relationships and how to combat them.

Healthy relationships are essential for our well-being. John and Julie Gottman found that the "masters of relationships" do the following things:

  • Know each other's inner world, share fondness and admiration and turn towards each other's attempts for connection often.

  • Navigate conflict effectively by shifting the focus to trying to understand each other's perspective, compromising, problem solving, and self-soothing when needed.

  • Support each other in their individual life dreams and share values and goals for the future.

Being Level 1 and 2 trained in the Gottman Method for couples therapy, we can help you work on each of these to move towards becoming one of the "masters of relationships." We've got you covered for your Calgary marriage therapy and relationship counselling needs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Couples Counselling

How is couples therapy conducted?

We offer both in-person counselling in Calgary and online throughout Alberta! If you choose online therapy as an option, it will be via a secure and encrypted platform called Jane. You will receive a link to the session 30 minutes prior to your appointment time.

How much does couples therapy cost in Calgary?

It depends on the credentials of the therapist. The Psychologist's Association of Alberta's recommended fee for Psychologists in Calgary is $220 per 50 minute session.

Do you offer sessions longer than 50 minutes?

Yes, Tri Lotus Psychotherapy also offers 75 minute session options if 50 minutes seems like too little time! The session fee is billed at the same rate as a 50 minute session; therefore, it would be $330.

Can couples counselling fix a relationship?

It depends! Couples counselling can help you to discover the root causes of your relationship issues, heal them, and provide ongoing tools to strengthen your relationship. If both partners are committed to working on these factors, then couples therapy can be effective in healing the relationship. The alternative would be to let the relationship concerns continue to fester, which isn't recommended!

We don't have a specific concern in our relationship, but want to be preventative. Can you still help?

Yes, of course! There are always skills to be learned to strengthen your relationship and preventative action is great! Couples therapy can be a great place to learn skills and spark deeper conversation and connection in the relationship.
